David: the King who needed a Shepherd

David Faith of FCC continues a series on Israel’s kings by examining why Israel asked Samuel for a king and contrasting Israel’s desire for a world-shaped king with God’s Word-shaped design for kings. God gives Saul as a mirror of their misplaced values, then replaces him with David. David Faith explains “a man after God’s own heart” as submitting one’s will to God’s will, noting David’s repentance despite serious sins. He then expounds Psalm 23, presenting God as the good shepherd who provides, the warrior guide who protects through the “valley of the shadow of death,” and the victorious host who defeats enemies and pursues with goodness and mercy. He urges submitting to God through Word and prayer, sharing in community, and leading others to Jesus, the true Shepherd-King.
